Last Teach A Friend, New Testament

  1.  According to the Bible Dictionary the Jews were looking for a deliverer to relieve them from their Roman persecutors.
  2. There is a saying that says, “you can’t see the forest for the trees.” It is possible the Jewish people were afflicted with this. They had in mind a deliverer that would come to physically remove them from the Romans. When their deliverer came in a different form from what they expected, they could not see beyond their own expectations.
  3. In contrast were those that believed Jesus and recognized the fulfillment of Isaiah’s words.
  4. Psalm 2:7 Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
Psalm 22:1 My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
Psalm 22:16 they pierced my hands and my feet.
Psalm 34:20 He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
In the heading to Psalm 2 we are told that the heathen will rage against the Lord’s anointed. Then the Lord speaks of his only begotten.
The first reference is a declaration that Jesus is Heavenly Father’s son and he is begotten. Jesus Christ is the only begotten of the Father. He is the only being to have been born of an immortal father and a mortal mother. The following three verses are in reference to the actual crucifixion. In order to succor us, Jesus experienced all that we may be exposed to. While on the cross he was left alone, without the support of Heavenly Father. This would be similar to the emptiness sinners feel when the Holy Ghost withdraws. Verse 16 tells of the actual crucifixion. This scripture points to the actual crucifixion with nails being driven through the accused hands and feet. This verse is in specific reference to Jesus being crucified. Verse 20 is in reference to the practice of breaking the bones of those hanging on the cross to hasten their death. The death was slow and painful. After hanging on the cross for up to 48 hours and in a gesture of sympathy, the victim’s legs would be broken to hasten their death. Jesus did not hang on the cross for hours waiting for death. When his mission was completed he voluntarily ended his mortal life. None of his bones were broken during his trial or crucifixion. In reviewing these scriptures it is interesting to me that the Jewish nation still do not believe their Messiah has come. As immersed in the scriptures as the devout are, it would be interesting to know how they explain these verses, now in retrospect to the events in history. At some point it seems as though pride does not allow them to admit that Jesus Christ was foretold to come as their Messiah and he was crucified by them.
  1. Ephesians 1:18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart.
Luke 24:16 But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
As two of Jesus disciples were walking to Emmaus, the resurrected Christ joined them. Verse 16 then states that their eyes were holden that they should not know him. In a commentary I read it explains that this means that Jesus kept them from recognizing him. In my quest to understand scripture and its personal message to me, I put myself in the shoes of those two disciples. I believe that I have experienced eyes that are holden. Not as explained in Luke, but in the verse in Ephesians we read: my understanding is darkened, being alienated from God through ignorance and by blindness of heart. I believe this condition of blindness can be summed up in three ways, confusion, stubbornness, and rebellion. All three of these conditions can be corrected with faith, repentance, and humility. When  blindness as to recognizing who the Savior is and what he has done the application of faith, as tiny as a mustard seed will begin the process of eliminating confusion in our testimony of the Savior. Those who are taught the principles of the gospel and continue to sin may be allowing a stubborn will to direct their decisions, rather than accepting the gifts offered through repentance. Both faith and repentance are pushed along when combined with humility. Once able to admit dependence on the saving grace of Jesus Christ we will recognize His teachings and accept them as our guide.
6.  I taught my husband about the blindness of the disciples and the blindness we create in our own lives through our choices. He suggested that some blindness is caused when we are not open to the teachings we receive in our study and our church attendance. As I was working on this assignment I ran across a quote that backs this up, it was published in the magazine called This People. The quote is: In a gospel-scholarly setting, one may readily agree, with Elder Neal A Maxwell, that “there are no coincidences.” There is purpose and order in the way God works with our minds as well as our spirits. If people go to a sacrament meeting, conference, or Sunday School class looking for nothing, that is usually all they will find." We do not have clear vision without effort and faith.

Final Essay New Testament

The most significant lesson learned this semester was in connection with the Last Supper. When Jesus and the disciples were in the Upper Room Jesus told them one would betray him. The immediate response from the disciples was, “Is it I?” My initial thoughts focused in on why these men would question themselves in connection with betrayal. In black and white Judas is a prime example of betrayal. He received 30 pieces of silver in exchange for the life of Jesus Christ. This betrayal came after being taught and mentored by a member of the Godhead. With this definition in mind, the question ‘is it I’ should not even be uttered by the other disciples. In applying this scripture to myself I must ask myself if ‘it is I’ that betrays Jesus. The answer is yes, every time I am dishonest, unkind, angry, selfish, or greedy and this is the short list. In combination with a lesson in my Life Skills class I learned that being defensive is a sign of entitlement, just another way I betray my testimony of Jesus Christ. Here is an illustration of what I learned and how it is changing my life. At work I review mortgage files for closing. Documents in the file are time sensitive. I had a file for review that was ready to go to closing. The processor left a note in the file to see her before I cleared the file for closing. It was in the afternoon as I checked for her, at her desk. She was not there any of three times I looked for her. As I was preparing to leave I saw her with a friend coming back from a late lunch. In that moment I decided I was justified to place the file in my desk and leave as planned. Fast forward to the next morning, shortly after arriving at work, with my supervisor at my desk questioning me about the file. In my defense, I told her I had done my due diligence in clearing the file to close…it wasn’t my fault she wasn't at her desk for two hours while I was looking for her. She is the one that put the note in the file, then was not available. This event happened the very week I was learning about entitlement and the question, ‘is it I? As I continued to work that morning I finally calmed down and asked myself, ‘is it I?’ The answer was yes, I had a part in this situation. I had options, but had been selfish because I wanted to get out the door. I easily could have passed the file to another employee and had them finish with the processor. I did not need to place blame at the feet of the processor. She had been in a meeting that afternoon, and then had taken her lunch hour. I did not help her move that loan ahead. I went to the processor and admitted I had not handled the situation correctly. I apologized and gave her permission to come to my desk if this ever happens again and go through the drawers to find the file and give it to someone else. She was kind and let me off the hook by telling me the docs would still go out on time. I am still asking myself in difficult situations ‘is it I.’ I am learning to look for solutions rather than defenses. I feel more peace in my life as I apply this lesson.
The second lesson of impact this semester has to do with this quote from Elder Cook, "How we relate and interact with each other is a measure of our willingness to follow Jesus Christ."  I have had a difficult time with relationships in my life. I take offense, I feel rejected, and I am stubborn. As I have studied the life and example of Jesus Christ I realize my responsibility in difficult relationships and have a continued desire to change myself and improve these relationships. Since getting married a long time ago, most of our Christmas Eve celebrations have been with my husband’s family, with traditional meals. I have carried that through with my own children as they have grown up and married, until a few years ago when Chinese food was introduced as the Christmas Eve food of choice. I have struggled with this change. I have felt selfishness, anger, disappointment at losing a tradition at the expense of some awkward moments with one my children. This year another one of my children had a brilliant idea. She suggested we adopt Christmas around the world on Christmas Eve which can include tamales, crepes…and Chinese food. As my family grows we will have more return missionaries, with new food experiences to introduce. We will more easily adapt to new experiences without harming relationships. Very most importantly we will be following the example of Jesus Christ.
The third lesson learned is the encouragement I have received through the study of the life of Jesus Christ is to continue to live worthy of the influence of the Holy Ghost. I have a habit of justifying myself when my work is below standard by saying, “I did my best.”  I believe I should do my best, but more important I want to do the Lord’s will. I cannot do this if I am not in tune with the Holy Ghost. I pray to be worthy his influence. I ask in my prayers to feel his influence and to act on those promptings. I also work at recognizing promptings as promptings. I continue to fall short, but have a greater desire to make progress.
This is my last assignment for this class. It feels appropriate to say for both this assignment and this class…In the name of Jesus Christ,  Amen

Thanks again…it has been very motivating for me to take this class. Merry Christmas!

Lesson 7 Choice 1 Two Parables

For this assignment I chose the first choice. It was the only choice I could make. I chose number to for the first assignment. I posted my answers on my blog at vonronicasviews@blogger.com.  The best thing about this assignment it the desire it gives me to gain eternal life. My patriarchal blessing mentions eternal life being the greatest gift of God. I enjoy learning about and increasing my desire to gain eternal life. This is the last student choice assignment of the semester. I am taking Book of Mormon next semester, but I will miss this focused study of Jesus Christ.

When Jesus instructed the rich young man to sell all that he had and come and follow him, the young man chose not to follow Jesus. It states that he went away sorrowful. To me this means he was sad that eternal life had such a steep price. He must have had a desire for eternal life, as he was asking how to obtain it. He enjoyed his wealth and could not see the greater value in eternal life, which is worth much more than his worldly wealth. The first thing promised of the Savior is eternal life if we keep the commandments. Then to his disciples he tells that gaining eternal life is hard, but not impossible. He tells them through the atonement all things are possible. All will be judged and awarded a place in the mansions prepared for them. The faithful will be awarded the highest degrees of glory.
After receiving the answer to sell all that he possessed, the young rich man walked away from the opportunity to gain eternal life. As members of the latter day church we contribute tithes, offerings, time, and talent. All four of these items do not equate to, go and sell all of our possessions, but for some even that portion is too great and some walk away from the opportunity to gain eternal life. In our day selling all that we have also includes keeping the covenants we have made at baptism and in the temple. It means we stand as witnesses of God in all things and in all places. It means we stand in holy places and are not moved by the buffetings of Satan. It means keeping the commandments no matter what. It means raising righteous families. Selling all that I have means that there is nothing in my life more important than walking the path set by Jesus Christ.

Hour Hired          $ Agreed to Pay              Hours Worked          Amount Paid
Early Morning          Penny a day.                        12                   Penny
3 hours later          Whatsoever is right.                   9                   Penny
Sixth Hour             Whatsoever is right.                  6                    Penny
Ninth Hour            Whatsoever is right.                   3                   Penny
Eleventh Hour        Whatsoever is right                    1                     Penny

We learn from this parable that the Lord will reward all who join in the gospel, regardless of where they are in their life span. It should be comforting to converts to realize they will be rewarded as if they had always been in the flock, regardless of their age when joining. To those that are life time members and feel as though they are somehow being cheated, it just isn't’t so. It seems as if lifetime membership is portrayed as a punishment rather than a lifetime blessing. The scriptures tell us that eternal life is the greatest gift of God. There is no limit to how many can gain eternal life. Eternal life doesn't run out. We experience joy when we are involved in saving souls. It doesn't make sense to feel disappointment or slighted when converts or reactivated members gain eternal life. I have a daughter that was not active for a few years. It was a difficult time. She is now active and her husband has been baptized. They have been sealed in the temple. Anyone that has had this type of experience can understand both the great sorrow and the joy that comes when someone you care about repents. All I have to do is picture my daughter and her husband as one of those that was hired on in the eleventh hour and I am grateful they will be rewarded the same as me. I want to be together as a family and I believe this parable teaches me that truth.

Lesson 7 Choice 2 Parables and Eternal Truths

For this assignment I read the assigned scriptures and recorded my answers to post on my blog at vonronicasviews@blogger.com. I used the standard LDS scriptures, the student manual The Life and Teachings of Jesus Christ & His Apostles, and The New Testament Made Easier. I chose this assignment because it seemed more interesting. This assignment is being added to the others I posted. It adds to the record I now have of assignments from this class. I will be able to use this material as a resource. This assignment would have been better if I wasn't as tired as I am. It is the last week of school, Christmas is one week away, and work is still a long ways a way. This assignment could be improved with more work and less exhaustion.

The Parable of the Unjust Steward
This parable is confusing to me after reading the student manual and a commentary. The moral of this parable has to do with preparation for eternal life.  The steward is aware he will soon be let go, so he hurries to collect a portion of debt owed to the rich man. These gestures developed friendships. This plan provided acquaintance for the hereafter, whereas money is earthbound and is useless in the hereafter. We learn from this example that we must be more concerned about our life after this one and less about building wealth and stock here.
The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus
In this parable Lazarus is a poor man; he dies and goes to paradise. The rich man does not help Lazarus in this life. He dies he goes to hell. From this we learn that how we treat others will determine our destination after this life. At the time of this parable paradise and hell are completely separate with no connection between them. Not until Jesus was crucified and as he lay in the tomb he visited the spirit world. During this visit he bridged the gap between hell and paradise. With this gap mended those in hell would be taught and have the opportunity to receive the gospel and ordinances performed vicariously. The last part teaches us that people living on earth that reject the gospel, the scriptures, and prophets do not miraculously become believers if they are visited by heavenly beings.  Lazarus asked that his relatives receive visitation so they could be scared into repentance. He is told that it won’t work. Those that reject what is in front of them will reject heavenly help also.
The Parable of the Ten Lepers
This parable has several lessons to learn. The first is to be obedient. When Jesus told the lepers to go show themselves to the priest as law required, it teaches us to follow His instructions given through the scriptures and modern day prophets. After walking a ways the lepers realized they were healed, only one returned to give thanks. Gratitude is important daily. We must be grateful to God for all that He provides, all that we are, and we must learn to be grateful to each other. We show gratitude by the way we speak, act, and serve. Another lesson from this parable to acceptance of all people. The one returning leper was a Samaritan and they were enemies of the Jews. Jesus did not withhold his healing and after his crucifixion his gospel was sent to all.
The Parable of the Unjust Judge
This parable suggests that we should not weary of praying, regardless of the time it takes to receive answer to our prayers. We are cautioned in the student manual explanation to not compare God with the unjust judge. Heavenly Father is not unjust and does not answer our prayers when we become annoying. We are encouraged to continue to pray always and not become weary in prayer.
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Publican

This parable warns us against puffing ourselves up with pride and treating others as if they are below us. The Pharisee was prideful in himself as he extolled his virtues in his vocal prayer. The publicans were disliked by the Pharisees, but they recognized their faults. This publican begged for mercy as a sinner in his prayer. We are all sinners and must come to the Lord with broken hearts and contrite spirits.

Lesson 6 Unit 2 Choice 2 The Holy Ghost

For this assignment I chose to read and answer questions regarding the Holy Ghost. It is Unit 2, Choice 2. I posted my work on my blog at vonronicasviews.blogger.com. My reference materials were the New Testament, the Bible Dictionary, and The New Testament Made Easier. I chose this assignment for the opportunity to study more about the Holy Ghost. I enjoy learning and studying. I remember feeling awe and reverence for the Holy Ghost after teaching a visiting teaching message where I was reminded that the Holy Ghost is a member of the Godhead. He deserves my reverence. I am also aware that it is my choice through my actions whether or not I have his companionship. He is easily offended by media choice, music with dark messages and rhythms, and of course my thoughts and actions. I pray often for the courage to choose the right so I will have his companionship. I also pray to feel the spirit at church and these prayers are consistently answered. I am grateful to have had this choice to study about the Holy Ghost. Reading more scriptures and articles would enlarge the knowledge gained from this assignment.

Lesson 6   Unit 2   Choice 2
  • John 14:15-17  The Holy Ghost can abide with us. We must be confirmed members of the church to have the companionship of the Holy Ghost.
  • John 24:26-27  The Holy Ghost will teach all things and bring the things Jesus taught to remembrance.  The Holy Ghost will bring peace so we are not afraid.
  • John 15:26-27  The Holy Ghost will testify and bear witness of Jesus Christ.
  • John 16:7-8  The Holy Ghost will reprove the world in respect to sin and righteousness. He will stand as a witness against those that reject righteousness.
  • John 16:13-14  The Holy Ghost will speak truth as told to Him by Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. He will show things to come. He will bear witness of Jesus.
From the Institute Manual:
The Holy Ghost quickens the intellectual faculties. It enlarges increases, expands, and purifies natural passions and affections and adapts them by wisdom to their lawful use. It inspires, cultivates, and matures our sympathies, joys, tastes, and feelings. It inspires virtue, kindness, goodness, tenderness, gentleness, and charity. He is a personage of spirit. His mission is to instruct and enlighten those who are faithful in keeping commandments. He bears witness of the truth. He is a special messenger and reveals the mysteries of the kingdom. He carries out the will of the Father and the Son. He is the third member of the Godhead. He is a personage of spirit. He is manifested both as the power of the Holy Ghost and the gift of the Holy Ghost. The power of the Holy Ghost is a convincing witness before baptism. The Holy Ghost gives one a testimony of Jesus Christ. The gift of the Holy Ghost comes only after baptism and is conferred by the laying on of hands. The gift allows companionship of the Holy Ghost to those who live worthy. The Holy Ghost is able to sanctify and purify a person from all sin, which explains why He is referred to as “fire”.
  • The apostles were left with the task of taking the gospel to all the world. The task of missionary work takes dedication and perseverance. This responsibility was left on their shoulders, but they were not alone. With the influence of the Holy Ghost they would teach as the Holy Ghost carried their message in to the hearts of those that listened and were pure. The Holy Ghost was the witness to those they taught to the convincing them to be baptized. The apostles would have had the Holy Ghost as their constant companion as they taught due to their obedience to the commandments. The disciples were carrying out the instructions of Jesus therefore the Holy Ghost would have been supportive as he carries out the will of the Father and the Son.

  • The way I feel the influence of the Holy Ghost is when I receive answers to my questions and prayers. I feel like my testimony has been a journey where gospel questions are answered through scripture or experiences. In August I was helping my daughter in California. I had taken my 21 month old granddaughter Penelope to the park. We had wandered all around the park playing on all the toys. When it was time to leave we walked to the car when I realized the keys to the car had fallen out of my pocket. I was a little bit frantic. It was too far to walk home with Penelope. As I turned back to the park I prayed in my heart to find the keys. Penelope and I walked toward the splash pad where I had sat and watched her play. I looked behind the cement wall where I had been sitting to watch and there I found the keys. It was the very first place I looked. I had received an answer to my prayer. I felt the influence of the Holy Ghost that day. A few weeks later I told some of my other granddaughters about the lost keys. I wanted to testify to them that my prayer was answered. They anxiously listened as I told them the story. The Holy Ghost touched their hearts as I shared this story. I also bore my testimony about this experience. Again the Holy Ghost helped me tell the story and he carried the message that my prayer was answered into the hearts of those listening.

Lesson 6 Choice 1

For this assignment I chose the option to read and answer questions regarding three parables including the Parable of the Ten Virgins. I made this choice because I love the story of the ten virgins. I love the truth that it teaches us. My resources were the LDS scriptures and The New Testament Made Easier.
Parable of the Ten Virgins
·         In the Parable of the Ten Virgins the Bridegroom represents Jesus Christ.
·         The virgins represent the believers in Christ.
·         The wedding represents the Second Coming of Christ.
·         The bridegroom comes at night to signify the importance of watching and being ready for his appearance always. No one knows when he will come. Those that are prepared will be able to meet him at any hour. This is what we are taught in regard to the Second Coming. We do not know when or where He will return, so we like the wise virgins must be prepared at all times.
·         The foolish virgins took their lamps, but had no oil with them. According to President Lee those that are wise are believers that use the Holy Ghost as a guide. Those that are foolish are disobedient. I think we have so many distractions in this life; it is easy to be less mindful of our duties as members of the church. We allow the distractions to occupy too much time, which leaves little time to be truly diligent and obedient. As a member I want to be prepared to meet the Savior at his Second Coming, but that may not happen as I may die prior to that event. I need to be prepared to meet God today and every day. We will all face judgment whether we are alive at His Second Coming or not. Those who do not prepare will be turned away just as the foolish virgins were.
·         The lesson learned from the wise virgins is to be prepared. To be prepared takes obedience to commandments, faith and prayer, learning to do the will of the Father over our own will. We must be diligent in our preparation. We cannot afford to take a break from our devotion. I know someone that takes Sunday ditch days. She calls them semi-annual ditch days, but I have noticed every time her family misses church it is one of their semi-annual ditch days. My definition of semi-annual is a lot different than hers. Through conversation she has also mentioned going to pizza with her non-member step daughter on Sunday or grabbing a few things at the grocery store. One of these drops of oil may not affect the overall preparedness of a member, but when the drops begin to accumulate there may not be enough oil on the appointed day.
·         Oil is added to our lamps with every righteous and obedient act we perform. It is best if we live our lives making righteous choices without having to think about it. We have oil in our lamps when we no longer have a disposition to do evil. It is important to live this way so we are worthy of the companionship of the Holy Ghost at all times, in that way we will not be deceived.

Parable of the Talents
·         In verses 21 and 23 it says the servants would be rulers over many things. According to the commentary I read that equates to exaltation. Both were rewarded the same for applying themselves with that which they were given. The third servant had that which he was given taken away and given to him that received five talents. Again according to the commentary I read this servant is sent to outer darkness to pay for his sins as he was unwilling to repent and take advantage of the Atonement. In all three circumstances the most important element of the story is to not be slothful with the blessings we are given. Regardless of the what we are given, if we squander our portion it will be taken away.
·         The third man hid his talent because he was afraid.
·         2 Timothy 1:7 teaches:  Fear does not come from God. He gives us power, love, and a sound mind.
Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches:  We must trust in the Lord with all our hearts not depend on our limited knowledge. We must acknowledge His hand in our lives and He will lead us.
D&C 3:7-8 teaches:  We must trust in God over trusting other human beings. If faithful we are promised protection from Satan. He promises to be with us always.
D&C 6:33-37 teaches:  We will reap what we sow. The good we do will bring a harvest of goodness. If we build our faith on Jesus Christ He will not let Satan win over us. Look to the Lord in all we do, do not doubt Him or his ability to save. We are to fear not. He promises if we are faithful and keep the commandments we will inherit the kingdom of God due to His Atonement.
·         Two gifts I believe I have received are learning and teaching. I love to learn. I learned how to read between kindergarten and first grade by pestering my sisters and brother. I would sit down with an easy book. I learned one word at a time. When I couldn’t remember a word I would ask again. By the time I started first grade I could read all the words the teacher was teaching the other kids. I have always loved to read, which to me a way to continue learning outside formal education. I also enjoy teaching. I like to share what I know with others. I enjoy learning as I prepare to teach and I love the good feeling I have after a lesson is over and it went well. I would like to finish my education and then work where I can teach.
The Parable of the Sheep and Goats
·         The difference in the way we treat others will be the difference in the way we are rewarded in the next life. Those that are charitable will be rewarded with eternal life, whereas those that are uncharitable are sent to everlasting punishment.

·         The six characteristics listed in Matt 25 are hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, stranger, and in prison. With technology today there are people suffering with all of these issues at my fingertips. Here in my city there is a food bank that accepts goods and volunteer work. The schools in my city accept volunteer work and donations which can be used as a tax write off. My husband visited a less active in our ward last night. He was told by the man of the house that they sometimes borrower money to get to work, thus they don’t have money to drive to church. This is an example of poverty of goods and spirituality. Our ward sets up an angel tree every December giving us the opportunity to help children enjoy Christmas morning. At tithing settlement our Bishop shared a bar graph showing the fast offering and missionary monetary needs in our ward. We are doing better on our fast offering contributions than our missionary fund contributions. Humanitarian and spiritual rescue are abundant in my city and around the world.

Preparing for the Second Coming

The assignment I chose to complete included reading and explaining the list ofscripture references that teach about the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. My references included the LDS version of the New Testament, the Bible Dictionary, and The New Testament Made Easier. I posted my work on my blog at vonronicasviews@blogger.com.  I chose this assignment to learn and review the Second Coming. It was helpful to review this information. I can remember as a teenager telling my sister that I was afraid of the Second Coming. She told me if I was prepared I wouldn't be afraid. Now as an adult I am not afraid in the same way. Although I feel more prepared I am grateful each day I wake up and have another day to prepare to meet God. The best part of this assignment is the reminder I received to be diligent by watching and praying, to continue to study the scriptures, and to always be a wise virgin. I do not know if there is significance to the reference to the trump being sounded. I researched trump and sound of a trump in the Bible dictionary to see exactly what that meant. I did not go any further. This and any assignment could be improved by more research by me.

Preparing for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ
Mark 13:5  Don’t be deceived by any man.
Mark 13:9  Believers will be a target for arrest and for beatings. The behavior of the tormentor’s will be held against them at their judgment.
Mark 13:23  Read the scriptures to know warnings foretold of the Second Coming.
Mark 13:33  No man knows the day of the Second Coming. Watch and pray in preparation.
Mark 13.:37  The warning is for every man on earth.
D&C 87:8  Jesus is the Light of the world. He is truth.
Joseph Smith-Matt 1:32  The abomination of desolation is mentioned in this scripture. According to the Bible dictionary this phrase spoken by Daniel means Jerusalem will be under siege in the last days.
Joseph Smith 1:37 This scripture teaches us if we treasure up, which would mean to study, ponder, and pray regarding the scriptures, we will not be deceived in the last days. It also tells that Jesus will send his angels to sound a trump and gather the remainder of the elect from the four corners of the world.
Joseph Smith-Matthew 1:46-50 This scripture repeats that no one knows when the Second Coming will take place. Then the scripture explains the importance of always being prepared. The example of a man of the house is told. If the man knew a thief was coming to break in he would have been prepared. Instead it is better to always watch for the second coming and always be prepared.  Key word always, do not procrastinate the day of repentance.
D&C 33:17  This scripture teaches all to pray always, to be prepared as were the five wise virgins, so when the Savior returns we are ready at that moment.

D&C 45:45-57 This scripture tells that the Second Coming will be in fulfillment of the parable of the ten virgins. The parable is the example of 10 virgins, five of which were wise and five were foolish. The five wise virgins received the gospel and practiced its principles. These virgins were able to go into the wedding feast. The five foolish virgins did not have the required oil in their lamps. One interpretation of the oil in their lamps is participation in the gospel. The five wise virgins attended their meetings, held callings, paid their tithing; all these are actions of which the wise virgins were unable to share with the foolish virgins. The time for action and preparation was past. The scripture says the wise virgins have received the truth or accepted the gospel and have not been deceived. The foolish virgins left to obtain the necessary oil, but upon their return the gates to the wedding party were closed and they were not able to enter.

Faith To Move Mountains

Matt 21:21 In this scripture Jesus said, “if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.  Reading this scripture always left me questioning my faith. Reading this scripture led me to a faith self assessment. I was not ever tempted to try my hand at moving a mountain; I knew in my heart I didn't have enough faith. Then I learned something that changed my perspective on this scripture. I cannot reference this idea, I apologize. I did not come up with this explanation, but I don’t where I read or heard it.  (If anyone has a source, please update me.) I learned that the mountain we are told we can move is not made of dirt and rock, but instead the mountain is our sin. With that in mind, if we have the faith of a mustard seed in the atonement of Jesus Christ we will be able to repent and overcome our personal mountains, a.k.a. sin. Our mountain may be made up of a lot of small sins or it may be big indiscretions. Either way it will take faith and repentance to move it. After learning this I was able to quit beating myself up for not having the faith to move the Wasatch Front and focus on my faith and repentance.

Lesson 5 Unit 1 Events Leading Up to the Crucifixion

This assignment was to record the important events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. My source was "The Life and Teachings of Jesus & His Apostles".

Day One     Jesus arrives in Jerusalem.
He rides through the city gate on a donkey.
Large multitude that believed him paved his way with palm branches and greeted him with the Hosanna shout.
He went to the temple, took note of activity and retired to Bethany.
Day Two     Jesus arrived at the temple to challenge Jewish leadership by clearing the grounds of money ex-changers.  He told them his house was a house of prayer.
Jesus retired to Bethany for the night.
Day Three      Upon arrival at the temple Jesus is confronted by priests questioning his actions and authority of the previous day.
Jesus responds with parables which offend the Jewish religious leaders.
Scribes and Pharisees challenge him. Jesus openly denounces them as hypocrites.
From this point forward Jesus teaches only the Twelve.
The Jewish leaders continued to conspire to put Jesus to death.  They realized it would be tricky, they did not want a riot during the Passover. The problem was solved when Judas, one of the Twelve offered to betray him.
Day Four     Jesus knows o f the plot to kill him.
Gospel writers do not mention the activity of Jesus on this day. He was probably outside the city.
Day Five      Jesus and the Twelve are together for the Passover meal in a home. Jesus introduces a new ordinance, the sacrament. He foretells of his death and indicates the one who will betray him.
Jesus offers the intercessory prayer. Then he leads them to the Garden of Gethsemane, which is outside the city walls. He takes Peter, James, and John further into the Garden, then leaves them to go further by himself to pray. He prayed to his Father that the cup might be passed from him, but would drink the bitter cup if need be. Jesus suffered the pain of all men, the agony so intense he bled from every pore.
Sometime later he rejoined the apostles.
An armed band led by Judas came to arrest Jesus.
He did not resist arrest. In the dark of night he was taken to an illegal trial.
Day Six     The Jewish leaders wanted to put Jesus to death, at the same time discredit him in front of his believers. To accomplish this they charged him with two crimes. First was blasphemy, which was a capital offense. He was convicted of this for stating he was the Son of God. This conviction would discredit him, but did not carry the death sentence, only the Roman governor to levy that punishment. To accomplish this he was charged with sedition against the state for claiming to be “king of the Jews”. Pilate found Jesus guiltless, but the Jewish leaders led the crowds to desire his destruction. Pilate feared a riot and gave in to the pressure and pronounced the death sentence, “Crucify him”. Jesus was brutally executed by crucifixion.  In the afternoon he voluntarily gave up his life. Passover began as sundown and the Jewish leaders did not want a body on the cross on the Sabbath. Jesus was taken from the cross and sealed in the tomb by two disciples.
Day Seven     It is the Jewish Sabbath. Jesus body is in the tomb. His spirit is visiting the spirit world.

Day of Resurrection     Jesus is resurrected from the dead and is seen by many witnesses. The testimony of the witnesses is that he lives. This is the good news of the gospel.

Lesson 4 Unit 2 Lesson to Learn from Parables

This assignment was to read the parables and write what I felt the Lord wanted me to learn. I used the LDS scriptures, "The Book of Mormon Made Easier", the Bible dictionary, and The Life and Teachings of Jesus & his Apostles" as my references.

The Parable of the Unjust Servant
After reading this parable several times I am still uncertain. One suggestion of the meaning is to be honest in our financial dealings. In verse ten it suggests if we are faithful in smaller details we will be faithful also in greater details. The opposite is also true when we are unjust in small details we are unjust in the greater details. In other words if we lie a little here and there, we most likely are lying in larger matters too.  It is also interesting to see the unjust steward scramble to procure friendship in case he gets released from his position as a steward. He is commended by the rich man for his actions, but it seems like the message is misleading and looks more like death bed repentance. A commentary I read explains that business minded people are more worried about their future here on earth, whereas church members are worried about their eternal reward instead.  This commentary, “The Book of Mormon Made Easier”, also suggests this parable tells us to be honest with our money. The author explains that the mammon of unrighteousness is descriptive of money used dishonestly by people. If we are wise and honest with money here on earth, it will allow us to enter into heaven, instead of the opposite if we are dishonest.
The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus
The message of this parable is to warn us that now is the time for us to prepare to meet God. We must be charitable to others. We must listen to the prophets and follow their counsel. Messengers will not be sent to scare us into repentance. This parable also teaches that prior to the death of Jesus Christ those who passed away were either sent to paradise or hell. There was no opportunity for those in hell to receive the gospel. Lazarus was received in paradise, whereas the rich man was not. With the visit of Jesus to spirit prison, the prison doors were opened so that the preaching of the gospel could take place beyond the veil. Those being taught are those that would have embraced the gospel on earth but did not have the opportunity. Now they can repent, accept ordinances performed vicariously, and enjoy eternal life.
Ten Lepers Healed, One Gives Thanks
This parable underlines the importance of giving thanks. Jesus healed 10 lepers, but only one returns to give thanks. In primary last Sunday, Sharing Time was on gratitude. The children could easily tell what we should be grateful for, but were a little stumped when asked how we show our gratitude. After seeing the kids in my primary and reading this I believe when teaching gratitude the ‘how to be grateful’ part is a learned skill and needs more emphasis.  Then after reading the Bible definition of leprosy, I had the thought that our sins could be likened to leprosy just like walls are called leprous. I picture myself mottled like mildew, an outward sign of my sins. Thus, l have leprosy (have sinned). I need to be healed. I can be healed by the Savior through repentance. I owe him my gratitude for healing me.
The Parable of the Unjust Judge
This parable reminds us to keep praying, even when we don’t receive the answer immediately. There are probably numerous reasons all prayers aren’t answered immediately. The question posed in verse 8 is interesting. It says, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith? This makes me wonder if through waiting for answers to unanswered prayers our true colors are revealed. We either continue faithful in prayer or give up our faith in frustration.
The Parable of the Pharisee and the Publican

This parable is an example of pride goeth before the fall. The example and caution is to be humble. Those who are boastful will encounter experiences which will teach them humility.

Week 3 Post 2 Requirements to Receive Miracles

Jesus taught the disciples that three things needed for miracles to be performed. He told them they needed faith. It didn’t need to be a lot of faith and compared it to a mustard seed. In addition to their faith they must fast and pray.
3 Nephi 18:20  For miracles in our lives this verse teaches we need to do three things. First ask Heavenly Father in Jesus’ name. Second is the instruction to ask for what is right. So it is a waste of time asking for anything that is contrary to the commandments. Then last of all is to believe we will receive what we are asking for.
D&C 50:29 This scripture teaches that we must be purified and cleansed of sin, then we ask in the name of Jesus and what we ask will be granted.
D & C 42:48  In this scripture it states that those with faith in Jesus will be healed if it is not their appointed time to die.

I have a granddaughter that shares my birthday. Her name is Jayne. When she was 18 months old she aspirated, we think it was a kernel of popcorn. She was on the brink of death. I witnessed a miracle the day of this accident. The priesthood saved her life. She is now 6 a healthy, happy 6 year old. I am thankful for the gospel in my life and to be learning and studying the life of Jesus Christ.

Week 3 Jesus Feeds the Multitude

This is one of my student choice assignments for this week. I compared two miracles where Jesus fed multitudes with a few fish. I included a few comments on the end...for those that read to the end!
Matthew 14:14-21
How many people were present?                           5,000 + women & children
What did they need?                                     The multitude needed food to eat.
What were they able to offer in an effort
to meet that need?                                        5 loaves of bread & 2 fishes
Words that describe the feelings of the
Savior towards the multitude:                     Compassion, they need not depart, give them to eat
Words or phrases describing what the
Savior provided for them:                           They did all eat, they were filled, they took up fragments
 Matt 15:323-38
How many people were present?                           4000 + women & children
What did they need?                                     They needed food to eat.
What were they able to offer in an
effort to meet that need?                             7 loaves of bread and a few little fishes
Words that describe the feeling of the
Savior towards the multitude:                     Compassion, I will not send them away hungry, lest they
                                                                        Faint by the way.
Words or phrases describing what the
Savior provided for them:                           All ate, all were filled, Seven baskets of food leftover.
In Romans 3:23 we read that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.  I have sinned which blocks my path to eternal life. I cannot overcome sin on my own.
I started thinking about the parable and what part I play. I am a loaf of bread. On my own my efforts are very small, but when I allow the Savior to bless me miracles happen. Here is my thought process combining the parable and Ether 12:27:
There was insufficient bread to feed the crowd.
I am insufficient. On my own I am not able to gain eternal life.
Jesus took the bread and blessed it. He fed the multitude.
Jesus shows me my weakness. I am humbled. I receive grace. I receive strength to overcome my weakness.

I am aware of my sin.  With faith in Jesus Christ I can repent. I will receive forgiveness. My weakness becomes strength as I gain power to resist temptation. As his disciple I grow in strength and wisdom.

Week Two New Testament: Parables

Parable: Method of teaching used by many, but most exclusively by Jesus Christ, especially during the Galilean portion of his ministry. Parables were used as away to teach religious truth, with the amount of understanding dependent on the faith and intelligence of the listener. To those not interested in the gospel the stories were meaningless, yet to the spiritual the stories gave understanding to the mysteries and secrets of the kingdom of heaven. Those who seek truth will find it buried in the parables.
The origin of the word parable is Greek, meaning side by side or comparison. Jesus taught gospel principle side by side to material objects that were common to the people of the time.
There are two aspects for the listener to consider, the application and the interpretation. When a parable is delivered there is only one meaning or interpretation of the story. When understanding its true meaning both context and setting are to be considered. From study of the time, location, people being taught, the true interpretation can be understood. There are rules in regard to interpretations of parables. First, the student should not link subordinate incidents to include the same meaning. Second, do not apply similar meaning when two stories share similar or parallel information. Third, the same words used in different parables can be used for different meanings. The example given is the word leaven which can illustrate the meaning of good or evil. Fourth, is that the comparison within a parable is not complete and is used to help understand, but does not affect the meaning of the parable. The parable is a window to how life is, not necessarily as it should be, with draws points of doctrine from the example. Last, find and apply the teaching of the parable rather than focusing and dissecting the story around it.  The study of the parables is valuable today as the application of the parables continues through every age and circumstance.

  1. Parable tares.   Matt 13:24-30: What describes the future growth of the church.
  2. Parables of the mustard seed and the leaven.  Matt 13:31-    Remarkable growth of the church in the future.
  3. Parables of the treasure and the pearl of great price.  Matt 13:44-46   Why members are willing to sacrifice.
  4. Parable of the gospel net. Matt 13:47-50     Why we send out missionaries.

The question is presented, what sacrifices would I make to obtain the gospel? As a life time member I don’t know. Conversion stories are so interesting and I am left wondering if I would recognize and receive the gospel if I had not been born into the gospel. It is easy to say I would give up family, wealth, or fame, but that would be guessing.
As far as sacrifices in relation to the gospel, there may seem to be a few of them.  There is the sacrifice of time. This would include temple attendance, church attendance, preparation for teaching and fulfilling callings. There is monetary sacrifice of tithes and offerings. I have one older brother that is not actively engaged and I believe our relationship has been compromised by my activity. I believe it is on his end. He is uncomfortable around active family members. In connection with the subject of my brother, there has been no sacrifice too great when I compare the current state of our lives. I would not want to be in my brother’s shoes. The yoke offered by Jesus is light to bear. Satan lured my brother down a dark and dreary path. The gospel is not a sacrifice it is the plan of happiness.

The net mentioned in Matt 13:47may be the missionary work of the Church. The net is cast out and gathers in all who will hear. In the end all who are faithful will be gathered in, but those who fall away and do not abide the commandments will be cast away.

Jesus Called Twelve Apostles

1.      James the son of Zebedee was with Jesus Christ on three occasions where all twelve disciples where not included. They were the raising of Jairus’ daughter, the Mount of Transfiguration, and the Garden of Gethsemane.
Andrew, who was the brother of Simon, was a disciple of John the Baptist.
Thomas, one of the twelve, his name means twin. Was he a twin?
   2.  An Apostle is a special witness of Jesus Christ, testifying of his divinity throughout the world. Originally the twelve called to be Jesus’ apostles were to be his closest disciples. After his death they were sent to teach the world of Him. In like fashion there are twelve apostles called in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.  They serve as a Quorum. Their duties differ from other officers in that they are sent forth to testify of the Divinity of Jesus Christ and his resurrected from the dead.
  3.          The Apostles were prepared as missionaries because they would have physical and emotional needs. The instructions given to them prepared them for both. They were told not to take money or food with them. They were told not to take extra clothing or shoes with them. They were told to ask for worthy people when they came into town and stay with them. They were told to salute the house, which in Luke 10:5 means say “peace to this house.”  In this way they were taught to follow customs.
Jesus told them where to go. They were to go first to the lost sheep of the House of Israel. Later they would take the message to the entire world. He reminded them to tell the people that the gospel was available to them. He told them they would see families divided due to the work. It would pit believers against unbelievers, but that God comes first.
He warned them they may be arrested and brought before kings and governors. They were to speak after being prompted by the Spirit, which would be the words of the Father. If they were being persecuted in a city, they were told to go to a different city. The work to be done is everywhere. He suggested they be cunning and use their common sense.
He gave them courage by telling them they would be watched over. He reminds them that Heavenly Father knows them and knows their concerns and needs. He reminds them that those that can kill them physically can’t take away their salvation. He tells them they will be treated in a similar way he was treated. He tells them not to fear.

4.    When Peter, James, and John were invited by the Savior to become fishers of men, they followed him when they got to land. They left behind their employment, homes, and  family members.  The easy answer is to just be like them, accept the invitation to follow Jesus without looking back. But in my real everyday life I get caught up in too much to do and I am not always anxiously engaged. I fall asleep while reading scriptures, I slack on my visiting teaching, or complain about my calling. It is at these times I am not following the example of Peter, James, and John. So when I catch myself murmuring or slacking with too much to do, I take the time to assess where my heart is. When I have a heart willing to follow Jesus, everything goes better.
